30-Minute Hat

I designed this hat to go along with my 90-Minute Scarf project. It is worked with 2 strands of worsted weight yarn, held together and worked as if they were one strand. In this project, both strands are pulled from the same skein, but you could use different yarns. It takes about 30 minutes to complete this project. I finished it in about 45, while cooking dinner, and with time taken to photograph a tutorial.

Yarn: Bernat Super Saver Solid [Worsted Weight Acrylic Yarn]
Work two strands together as if they were one
Hook: US 9.0mm (N)
Hat Size: Adult
Find this pattern on Ravelry

Special Stitches: Front post double crochet (fpdc) and back post double crochet (bpdc)
See my FPDC/BPDC Stitch Tutorial for how to do these stitches. If you are uncomfortable with these stitches, just omit them. You will then work rnds 10 & 11 the same as rnd 5. After that, you may choose to add an additional rnd of (ch 1, sc into each st around, sl st to join) if you want to snug up the bottom.

Begin by making a magic ring. (See this tutorial I found on youtube)

RND 1: Once you have made the magic ring, ch 3, and do 8 dc into the ring. Tighten ring and sl st into the top of your initial ch 3 to join.

RND 2: Ch 3, do 2dc into each dc from the previous rnd. sl st into the top of your initial ch 3 to join.

RND 3: Ch 3, dc into the first dc, *2dc into the next dc st, and 1 dc into the following st* Repeat from * to * around until the end of the rnd. sl st into the top of your initial ch 3 to join.

RND 4: Ch 3, dc into each of the next 2 sts. *2 dc into the next dc st, and 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts* Repeat from * to * around. sl st into the top of your initial ch 3 to join.

RNDS 5 - 9: Ch 3, 1 dc into each st around. sl st into the top of your initial ch 3 to join.

RND 10: Ch 3 *fpdc into the next st, bpdc into the following st* Repeat from * to * around. sl st into the top of your initial ch 3 to join.

RND 11: Ch 3 *fpdc into each fpdc and bpdc into each bpdc* around. sl st into the top of your initial ch 3 to join. fasten off.

Rnds 10 & 11 should give your hat a snug but stretchy band around the ears.

EDIT:

Some people have had trouble getting their hat to be the right size. When working with 2 strands of yarn and a larger hook, gauge can vary dramatically from person to person. I strongly recommend that you try on your hat frequently to make sure it is the right size.

To make the hat wider, do this for your row 5:
Ch 3, dc into each of the next 3 sts. *2 dc into the next dc st, and 1 dc in each of the next 4 sts* Repeat from * to * around. sl st into the top of your initial ch 3 to join.

To make the hat longer, repeat the row 9 pattern for an extra 1-3 rows, depending upon how much longer the hat needs to be. Try it on as you work!

  3. I do a double crochet hat that is very similar to this one, but it's done with a smaller hook and one strand of yarn. also the starting number of double crochets is different. Also was EXCITED to see the ribbed band at the bottom of the hat because I just learned how to do front & back post double crochets. Yay!!! :)

    2. I've used a number of patterns, and if you're looking for an alternative DC hat, I'd advise the one in "Stitch and Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker". The book is well worth the purchase ($10 on amazon) and it has a ton of great beginner patters. You can also search ravelry.com for free patterns.

  6. Hi. Thanks for this pattern. I'm making several hats for Christmas gifts so I appreciate a 30 min hat. You mentioned that you pulled yard from the same skein. How did you do that? Did you pull the yarn from both ends or unraveled the entire skein to double the yard? Thanks!

  7. I pulled the skein from both ends, however, that doesn't always work (stupid skeins that refuse to center pull). In that case, I just throw it on the yarn winder and make two about-equal sized skeins out of it. I have made other projects from that same skein and I still have some left over, so you should be fine splitting a skein.

    1. What dimensions/number of stitches/rows did you use to make it child and doll size? I am always in doubt as to how to make things smaller.

  10. Can't wait to try this. I hope it can make it look good, I would like to make several to give away. If you have a crochet sock pattern I would like to have it too. I like knee socks and can't find them that long. Thanks again Carolyn

  14. This hat pattern is perfect. I've made 4 of them. I intend to make 35 hats and scarves for my choir members for Christmas 2012.

  15. How do you make these scarves? Is there a video for them. I am not dumb but, unfortunately the pattern that you are giving is not really explaining it clearly. Why didn't you lay them out flat? Please help

    1. The link above to the 90 minute scarf pattern has many links to videos on how to do the stitches. They are long scarves, so I could not lay them flat for a photo. If you let me know what part of the pattern is confusing you, I'd be glad to help.

  18. Looks easy. And don't worry about the picture on the red cushions. I didn't notice it until I read the negative comments. Some people find fault with everything. The scarves are pretty.

    1. Some people stitch much tighter than others. You might add more rounds of increases and making a few extra rows!

  23. would it not be better to work this hat in the round without having to slip stitch or chain?

  24. Just finished the 90minute scarf used two different skeins as suggested, one variegated and one solid. I decided to make something for 43 relatives for Christmas 2015, this scarf will be made for many of them. Thank you so much for this pattern!

  25. Instead of using 2 strands of yarn, could this be made with one strand of super bulky yarn, like Lion Brands's Jiffy Thick and Quick? I found some pretty clearance yarn in that brand that I'd love to use.
